IPE Poggiolevante is a hall of residence for male University students in Bari, very near to Economics, 2 km far from those the Medicine School and 3 km from the main Campus (Politecnico and Aldo Moro University).
It is promoted by IPE Institute for research and educational activities, a non-profit organization which runs in Naples two other University Colleges (male and female) accredited by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.
It started in 1964 with a small hall of residence (Residenza Universitaria della Nave) run by Fondazione Rui. In 1994 it moved to a new large building (38 bedrooms) and has been run so far by I.P.E., with the name Residenza Universitaria del Levante.
In 2017 it changed its name into Collegio Universitario di Merito IPE Poggiolevante hosting students from the two universities of Bari, from different courses, but also starting the ASIRID project.
Several hundred students have taken advantage of its training services that are not limited to accommodation, but they have contributed to their personal development. The current President of a large multinational corporation, a student in Bari in 1969 in the hall of residence wrote recently: It was an experience that changed me for good and allowed me to embark on the path of my professional and human life.
The educational objective of residence is in tune with what was stated by John Henry Newman in his book "The Idea of University", outlining the value of the study for the young university student: It is the education which gives a man a clear conscious view of his own opinions and judgments, a truth in developing them, an eloquence in expressing them, and a force in urging them. It teaches him to see things as they are, to go right to the point, to disentangle a skein of thought, to detect what is sophistical, and to discard what is irrelevant. It prepares him to fill any post with credit, and to master any subject with facility. It shows him how to accommodate himself to others, how to throw himself into their state of mind, how to bring before them his own, how to influence them, how to come to an understanding with them, how to bear with them. He is at home in any society, he has common ground with every class; he knows when to speak and when to be silent; he is able to converse, he is able to listen; he can ask a question pertinently, and gain a lesson seasonably, when he has nothing to impart himself; he is ever ready, yet never in the way; he is a pleasant companion, and a comrade you can depend upon; he knows when to be serious and when to trifle, and he has a sure tact which enables him to trifle with gracefulness and to be serious with effect.
IPE Poggiolevante is an educational activity promoted by faithful of Opus Dei, a Roman Catholic Institution. The College is open to students of any race, religion or nation.
IPE Poggiolevante adheres to the Conference of University Colleges of Merit (CCUM) accredited by the Ministry of Education that recently conducted a survey on employment work of his former students. Compared to Istat sample which showed a 77.5% rate of employment, the CCUM sample detected 92% of employees. This shows the immediate effectiveness of the training received by living college years in a Merit Colleges.
IPE Poggiolevante adheres to Euca European University College Association which aims to create an international network of university colleges to promote cultural exchange and experience between European students and thus encourage the spirit of active citizenship who lives in every young person.
