Wikidata Birthday 2026

a bilingual Italian/English event celebrating Wikidata's fourteenth birthday

domenica 25 ottobre 2026 - 18:00-21:00

The event will bring together Wikidata contributors, researchers, librarians, university staff, conference participants and anyone interested in open knowledge and linked data.

Through short presentations, and on-demand hands-on activities, participants will explore how Wikidata can support research, cultural heritage, libraries, universities and collaborative knowledge sharing.

Everyone interested in Wikidata is welcome, from complete beginners to experienced contributors and researchers. No previous detailed knowledge of Wikidata is required.

The event will be conducted in Italian and English, depending on participants’ needs.

See the Wikidata Fourteenth Birthday page.

18:00–18:15 | Welcome and introductions

Michele Crudele, Director Poggiolevante

Ferdinando Traversa, President WMIT

A brief welcome, introductions by the local organizer and participants.

18:15–18:30 | Wikidata in a nutshell

A short introduction to Wikidata’s structure, collaborative model and main uses. This introduction can be shortened or skipped if all participants are already familiar with the project.

Camillo Pellizzari, Alessandro Marchetti

18:30–19:00 | Wikidata in practice: projects, tools and experiences

A series of short contributions by the organisers and participants, illustrating short presentations of projects. Possible topics include:

  • Alessandro Marchetti: bibliographic methadata, cultural heritage metadata, data round-tripping
  • Camillo Pellizzari: projects in Italy with libraries and universities
  • Francesco Tosoni:

Each contribution should last approximately 5–7 minutes, leaving room for a variety of perspectives.

19:00–19:30 | Questions and discussion

Questions and comments on the presentations, with the opportunity to identify topics participants would like to explore further.

19:30–20:30 | Hands-on Wikidata session

A practical, collaborative session built around participants’ interests and experience. Depending on the audience and available equipment, participants can choose between two complementary activities:

  • Getting started: exploring Wikidata, understanding items and statements, and making a first edit with guidance from experienced contributors.
  • Going further: exploring queries, tools and data reuse, or discussing how to apply Wikidata to research, libraries, cultural heritage and other projects.

Participants can work individually or in small groups, with organisers available to provide guidance. The activities can be adapted to the available computers, internet access and participants’ prior knowledge.

20:15–20:30 | Wrap-up and next steps

A final round of feedback, sharing of useful resources and projects, and discussion of possible future collaborations.
